June 9-12, 2009

The third of three Veterinary Interns, from the Regional Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield, VA., is scheduled to spend the week with Dr. Julie Smith and the staff of the AnimalScan as part of a rotating internship. Rotating Internships allow the interns to spend focused time with specialists in different areas of expertise during their year long program. This week will focus on anesthesia review and case management.

March 31-April 3, 2009

January 15, 2009

A Veterinary Dentistry resident from the Animal Dental Center in Towson, MD, will spend a day with Dr. Julie Smith and the staff of AnimalScan dedicated to an in-depth review of anesthetic and analgesic management of veterinary patients. Dentistry residents are required to spend 40 hours with a Board Certified Veterinary Anesthesiologist as part of their residency requirements.

November 17, 2008

Dr. Julie Smith will present a continuing education seminar to the technical staff at the Greenbriar Veterinary Referral and Emergency Hospital, Frederick, MD. Topics to be discussed include ventilation, ventilator use and troubleshooting and overall anesthesia review.

October 26, 2008

Dr. Julie Smith will travel to Virginia Beach, VA, to present Understanding the Benefits of Anesthesia Monitoring and Current Approaches to Anesthetic Management of Companion Pet Patients. This four hour continuing education seminar is designed for both veterinarians and veterinary technicians and is sponsored by Abbott Laboratories.

September 27, 2008

Dr. Julie Smith presented a continuing education seminar to the technical staff at the Mid-Atlantic Animal Specialty Hospital, Huntingtown, MD. Vital signs monitoring during anesthesia of companion pet patients and anesthesia/analgesia protocol review.

September 24, 2008

Practitioners boarded with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners from the surrounding area joined Dr. Robert Toal, Board Certified Veterinary Radiologist and authority on MRI for veterinary patients, for a dinner discussion focused on the implementation of MRI in the diagnostic workup for companion pets.

August 7, 2008

Local area Veterinary Surgery Specialists are invited to join Dr. Patrick Gavin, Board Certified Veterinary Radiologist and world renowned authority on MRI for veterinary patients, at AnimalScan for an dinner discussion focused the importance of MRI in diagnosis of many surgical diseases.

July 7-11, 2008

Collaborative Programs

Northern Virginia Community College

AnimalScan in Vienna, VA, collaborates with the Northern Virginia Community College as part of the Veterinary Technician Associates Degree Program. Students enrolled in the program are required, as part of their Veterinary Anesthesia Course each Spring, to observe a case managed by the anesthesia team at AnimalScan. This program is organized and implemented by Lynn Abbott, Licensed Veterinary Technician, head veterinary technician with AnimalScan and a former graduate of the program.

Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine Externship

AnimalScan in Vienna, VA, is approved as a three week externship site for Students in the Veterinary Doctorate Program at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Students observe and participate in state-of-the-art patient care and vital signs monitoring during anesthesia for MR imaging and are introduced to the use and value of MR imaging as a diagnostic tool.

Veterinary Student Opportunities

AnimalScan, Vienna, VA, welcomes students enrolled in any Veterinary Program for an externship or volunteer rotation providing instruction in veterinary anesthesia and exposure to MR imaging. Over the past six years, we have enjoyed working with students from several Veterinary Colleges; Colorado State University, Tufts University, University of Georgia, and Kansas State University.

Veterinary Techician Anesthesia Specialty Certification

The anesthesiologists at AnimalScan support the certification of veterinary technicians in the specialty area of veterinary anesthesia and are happy to provide anesthesia review and study sessions for technicians working toward this certification.
